Arrest made after Birmingham Broad Street assault

West Midlands Police have made a significant breakthrough in their investigation into a serious assault on one of Birmingham's most famous nightlife streets.

Arrest Follows Photo Appeal

A 27-year-old man is now in custody after being arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on Saturday, December 13. The arrest came shortly after detectives issued a public appeal for information, sharing an image last week on January 2.

The victim, a 28-year-old mechanic, was on a night out with friends when he was attacked. The assault happened at around 11pm as the group was crossing the road from the Walkabout bar towards Popworld on Broad Street.

Victim's Serious Injuries

The attack left the young man with severe facial injuries requiring hospital treatment. He was taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton on the night of the assault.

He underwent surgery on the following Monday and was discharged from hospital the day after his operation. The surgery was required to address a significant jaw injury sustained during the assault.

Police Investigation Progress

In an updated statement released on Tuesday afternoon, January 6, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Police confirmed the arrest. "A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an assault on Broad Street, Birmingham on 13 December," the statement read.

The investigation had initially seen officers approach a group on the night of the incident, but no arrests were made at the scene. The subsequent photo appeal proved crucial in moving the case forward, leading to the latest development.

This incident has raised renewed concerns about safety in Birmingham's bustling entertainment district, particularly during the busy festive period. The police continue to urge any witnesses or anyone with further information to come forward.
