An 'avoid the area' warning remains in place more than 24 hours after a massive fire broke out at a skip firm in Wolverhampton. Residents and workers near Jones Skips on Cross Street have been urged to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.
Firefighters Called in Early Hours
Fire crews were called to the recycling yard at around 4:25 am on Monday, July 6. The blaze involved approximately 1,000 tonnes of recycling materials and also affected a large shed-like building and some machinery on site.
Challenging Conditions for Crews
On-site staff used a mechanical grabber to assist firefighters in breaking up and moving some of the recycling material. However, West Midlands Fire Service described extinguishing the fire as 'challenging' due to 'the large amount of deep-seated material involved and access issues'.
Steady Progress Made
By 6 pm on Monday, crews reported 'steady progress' as they dampened down debris across the site. The fire service expected to 'remain in attendance throughout the night'.
Update on Tuesday Morning
An update at 5:26 am on Tuesday, July 7, stated: 'We still have crews in attendance at a fire on Cross Street, Wolverhampton. As a precaution, if you live or work nearby, please keep doors and windows closed. Avoid the area, where possible.'
West Midlands Fire Service continues to monitor the situation and advise the public to stay away from the vicinity. No injuries have been reported.
