More than 100 people armed themselves with glass bottles and other objects, hurling them at police officers during a mass brawl outside a Birmingham nightclub. The violent disorder occurred on John Bright Street in the city centre at around 10.30pm on Saturday, May 23, as revellers were leaving the nearby King of Clubs venue.
Police Response and Licence Suspension
Supt Karl Thomas of West Midlands Police described the incident as a violent disorder involving over 100 people using items as weapons. He applied to Birmingham City Council's licensing department for an expedited review of the club's licence, citing serious concerns for public safety.
During a licensing sub-committee hearing on Thursday, May 28, the committee chair Coun Diane Donaldson announced the suspension of the premises licence, preventing the club from opening until a full review is completed within 28 days.
Club Management Unaware of Incident
Angele Nelson, the club's designated premises supervisor, and Ollie Amidipe, the security agency provider, stated they were unaware of the incident. The details, captured on CCTV and body-worn cameras, were discussed in private due to an ongoing criminal investigation.
Police confirmed that glass bottles and other items were thrown at officers, but thankfully no serious injuries were reported. Several items linked to drug use were also seized at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
West Midlands Police are continuing their enquiries and urge anyone with information or footage to contact them on 101 or via Live Chat, quoting log number 5385 of May 23.
