Birmingham Man Sentenced for Prolonged Coercive Control and Financial Exploitation

A man from Moseley, Birmingham, has been jailed for subjecting his vulnerable partner to seven years of relentless coercive control and financial abuse. Tarsam Singh, 54, of Church Road, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court.

Details of the Abuse and Exploitation

Singh targeted a woman with significant mental and physical health difficulties, claiming to act as her carer while instead engaging in systematic abuse. He regularly demanded daily payments of £10 to £15 from her Personal Independence Payment benefits, later increasing to £20. Singh took her bank cards without permission, stole her phone to purchase alcohol, and arranged for his own benefits to be paid into her account.

The court heard that Singh verbally abused his partner, including degrading her in front of his drinking friends and her family. Prosecutor Mia McNevin stated that the abuse "continued for many years and presented itself in many ways." Singh constantly shouted and swore at the woman, mocking her health issues in public to embarrass her.

Impact on the Victim and Court Proceedings

The victim described feeling "overwhelmed" by Singh's control, saying, "He will ruin my day, ruin my mood, put me on a downer." She explained how she "fell victim to his bullying tactics" as he would talk over her and erode her confidence over time.

During the trial, it was revealed that Singh has faced bullying and assault while on remand in prison. His barrister noted that "he has been subjected to bullying from other prisoners and he has been assaulted several times while remanded in custody."

Recorder Abigail Nixon concluded that there was "absolutely no remorse on his behalf" despite Singh's last-minute claim of remorse. She imposed a ten-year restraining order alongside the prison sentence to protect the victim from further harm.

Broader Implications and Community Response

This case highlights the severe impact of coercive control and financial exploitation in domestic abuse situations. Authorities emphasize the importance of recognizing such patterns early and seeking support. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for those who perpetrate such abuse, aiming to deter similar behavior in the community.
