Birmingham Resident Sentenced to Prison for Indecent Exposure at Derby Railway Station

A man from Birmingham has been handed a significant prison sentence after committing acts of indecent exposure outside Derby Railway Station and subsequently while in police custody. Christopher Pittar, aged 44 and residing on Princip Street in Birmingham, was found guilty of exposure following a disturbing incident that occurred on the evening of 26 February.

Details of the Offensive Incident

The court heard that Pittar lay on the ground outside Derby Railway Station just before 7pm, where he deliberately lifted his jacket and pulled down his trousers to indecently expose himself to passing travellers. In a further attempt to attract attention, he began shouting loudly during the episode. A female witness, who observed Pittar's lewd behaviour, immediately walked away and reported the incident to a patrolling British Transport Police officer, leading to his prompt arrest.

Repeat Offences in Custody

While being held in custody following his initial arrest, Pittar shockingly exposed himself a second time to officers and staff present at the facility. This additional act demonstrated a complete lack of remorse and compounded the severity of his actions. On 18 March, Pittar appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court, where he was convicted on one count of exposure and admitted to a separate count of indecent behaviour in a police station.

Court Sentencing and Restrictions

The magistrates sentenced Pittar to seven months in prison for his crimes. In addition to the custodial term, the court imposed several stringent measures:

  • Registration on the sex offenders register for a period of seven years.
  • A five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that prohibits him from entering any railway station in the UK without a valid ticket or legitimate reason.
  • The SHPO also bans him from undoing, loosening, or removing any items of clothing, or touching himself inappropriately while at stations or on trains.
  • A mandatory victim surcharge payment.

Police Response and Public Safety Message

British Transport Police Detective Sergeant Nick Tatlow provided a statement regarding the case, emphasising the seriousness with which such offences are treated. "Pittar showed no remorse for his senseless behaviour, even repeating his actions while in custody," said DS Tatlow. "He targeted a woman with his disgusting actions, and I am thankful to her for reporting the incident so we could bring Pittar before the courts and now behind bars."

DS Tatlow also urged the public to report any sexual offences witnessed or experienced on trains or at stations. "If you experience or witness a sexual offence on board a train or at a station, I urge you to report it to one of our officers on the network or by texting us discreetly on 61016. We take every report seriously and will stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders like Pittar to justice."

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by British Transport Police to combat sexual offences in public transport environments and underscores the importance of community vigilance in reporting such incidents to ensure offenders are held accountable.
