Police Warn of Fake New Year Fireworks Events in Birmingham City Centre
Birmingham Police Warn of Fake New Year Fireworks Events

West Midlands Police have issued a direct warning to the public about false social media posts advertising New Year's Eve fireworks displays and events in Birmingham city centre.

No Official Events Planned for 2026

There are no organised firework displays or official city-centre gatherings to ring in the new year of 2026. This clear statement from authorities aims to prevent a repeat of last year's disappointment, where many were misled by online rumours.

Police are urging revellers and families to treat any posts promoting such events with extreme caution. The force has confirmed it will have officers on high-visibility patrols over the festive period, but these are for general public safety, not to manage a non-existent official celebration.

Lessons from Last Year's Disappointment

In December 2024, fake social media posts circulated widely, promising a spectacular fireworks show in Centenary Square, the location of the popular Ice Skate Birmingham attraction outside the library.

These false claims led to significant confusion. Numerous families and party-goers made wasted journeys into the city centre, expecting an extravaganza, only to be left frustrated and disappointed when nothing occurred.

A police spokesperson stated: "Every year, rumours start to spread online about big celebrations in the city. Unfortunately, these false claims often lead to confusion and disappointment. We don’t want that to happen again."

Public Urged to Help Stop Misinformation

The police appeal highlights the real-world consequences of online misinformation. When large, unexpected crowds gather for an event that does not exist, it creates unnecessary pressure on public transport, emergency services, and leads to congestion.

The public is asked to only share accurate information from trusted sources and to contact West Midlands Police directly if they are unsure about the legitimacy of an advertised event.

The force's statement concluded: "Help us keep Birmingham safe and enjoyable for everyone this New Year’s Eve. We’re here to help clarify and stop misinformation from spreading."
