Police have sealed off an underpass near a Birmingham shopping centre after a woman reported being raped. The incident occurred on Church Road, Yardley, around 3pm on Saturday, July 4, according to West Midlands Police.
Underpass cordoned off for investigation
On Monday, July 6, officers cordoned off the underpass near the Swan Shopping Centre, preventing entry as a forensic examination was conducted. The scene is close to Coventry Road and the Swan Island in South Yardley.
West Midlands Police confirmed that specially trained officers are supporting the victim. The investigation includes forensic examinations and a trawl of CCTV footage from the area.
Police appeal for information
In a statement, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "An investigation is underway after a woman reported she was raped on Saturday (4 July) on Church Road, Birmingham at around 3pm. Specially trained officers are supporting the woman, and officers are continuing with their enquiries, including forensic examinations and CCTV trawls in the area."
The police have urged anyone with information to come forward. The spokesperson added: "We would ask anyone with any information to call 101 quoting incident number 4989 of 5 July. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
Community impact
The sealed-off underpass has caused disruption for pedestrians and shoppers near the Swan Shopping Centre. The area remains closed as police continue their work. The victim is receiving support from specialist officers.
