Disgruntled Boyfriend Jailed for 11 Years After Deliberate Gas Pipe Explosion
A disgruntled boyfriend has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for deliberately cutting a gas pipe, causing a massive explosion that destroyed a terraced house in Derby and severely damaged neighbouring properties.
Explosion Details and Aftermath
The incident occurred last June on Eden Street in Alvaston, Derby, after Paul Solway's partner, Joanne Waterfall, asked him to leave her home. In response, Solway disconnected the gas main in the basement and set fire to a chair in the kitchen, igniting the gas and triggering a huge blast.
Footage of the explosion was released by Derbyshire Constabulary following Solway's conviction. The terraced house and two adjacent properties were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished, with additional harm caused to several other homes and nearby vehicles.
Residents on Eden Street were forced to evacuate for several days during demolition work, according to police reports.
Rescue and Injuries
Paul Solway and the family dog were rescued from the rubble after the explosion. While the dog made a full recovery, Solway suffered serious injuries, including severe burns, and spent several weeks in hospital.
Despite his claims to police that he had no recollection of the day and would not have tampered with the gas main, investigations confirmed the explosion was deliberate, caused by the ignition of natural gas after interference with the supply.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
At Derby Crown Court on Wednesday, April 8, Solway, 58 and of no fixed abode, admitted to six counts of damaging property while being reckless as to whether life was endangered. He was jailed for 11 years and must serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release.
This case highlights the severe consequences of reckless actions, with the explosion not only endangering lives but also causing extensive property damage and community disruption.
