Violent Burglar Jailed for Attacking Elderly Woman and Stealing Wedding Ring

A violent and opportunistic burglar who grabbed an elderly woman by the neck and stole her wedding ring has been sentenced to prison. The incident occurred in Dudley, where the victim, a woman in her 80s, was targeted in a frightening home invasion.

Details of the Attack

The victim had just returned to her home on Lake Street in Dudley when Michael Williams, 58, approached her, claiming to be a relative. He then grabbed her by her clothes and neck, forcing his way inside the house by pushing her out of the way. Once inside, Williams stole the victim's purse, a gold chain, and her wedding and engagement ring, items of great sentimental value.

The elderly woman managed to call a family member for help, leading to a scuffle as a man attempted to stop Williams from stealing from his relative. During the altercation, Williams punched the man and fled down the road in an effort to escape.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

Officers responded quickly after receiving a call for help at around 6 p.m. on August 3 last year. They found Williams nearby, still in possession of the stolen items while in a car. Williams, of Bewdley, Worcestershire, was arrested and later charged.

He appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on March 26, where he pleaded guilty to burglary and assault by beating. As a result, he was jailed for three years and three months.

Statement from Police

Speaking after the case, Pc Alex Griparis of Dudley's Neighbourhood Crime Team commented on the incident. "This was an opportunistic crime targeting an elderly woman who Williams thought was an easy target, and would allow him to get away with stealing the victim's personal and sentimental jewellery," he said.

"But thanks to the woman calling us straight away and calling for help, officers were at the scene quickly and were able to find Williams and arrest him. This was a scary ordeal for the woman and man, and I hope this sentencing will give them some peace that he's now behind bars for his crimes."

The case highlights the importance of community vigilance and prompt reporting of crimes, especially those involving vulnerable individuals. The sentencing serves as a reminder that such violent acts will be met with serious legal consequences.
