Derby Man Found Guilty of Brutal Murder After Stabbing Friend Multiple Times
Thomas Turner, a 64-year-old man from Derby, has been convicted of murder following a horrific attack on his friend, Mandy Riley. The violent incident occurred in her own home, where she was stabbed 11 times in the neck after refusing to give Turner money.
Details of the Fatal Attack and Aftermath
The murder took place on June 4 last year at Harriet Tubman House in Derby. Turner had been drinking and smoking with Ms Riley, 47, when he asked her for cash. Police reports indicate that he became enraged when she declined his request, leading to the fatal stabbing.
After killing Ms Riley, Turner rifled through her handbag and stole money to purchase alcohol and drugs. He then attempted to conceal his actions by visiting another friend's house on Duncan Road, where he washed his clothes in a washing machine before leaving silently.
Investigation and Forensic Evidence
Ms Riley's body was discovered by a friend on June 5, after she failed to respond to calls for a medical appointment. Derbyshire Constabulary arrested Turner on suspicion of murder later that day. While in custody, he refused to cooperate with interviews and remained silent during questioning.
However, forensic analysis proved crucial in the case. Turner's DNA was found on the strap and exterior of Ms Riley's purse. Additionally, a distinctive crack pipe belonging to the victim was located among Turner's belongings at the Duncan Road property.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Turner denied the murder charge and stood trial at Loughborough Crown Court. Jurors delivered a guilty verdict on April 2, seeing through his false claims. He now faces a life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for April 21 at Lincoln Crown Court.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Sanders, who led the investigation, stated: "Mandy Riley was killed in the one place she should have felt safe, and by someone she trusted as a friend. Having murdered Mandy, Turner then stole from her before using the money to feed his drink and drug habit."
She added that Turner's repeated denials were ultimately disproven by the evidence, ensuring he will spend a significant period behind bars.
