A violent offender from Derby has been imprisoned after attacking his girlfriend in a Midlands hotel when she discovered messages to other women on his phone. Jamie Mewis, 36, was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on March 3, receiving a 21-month jail term and a 10-year restraining order.

The incident occurred in August 2024 while the couple was staying at a hotel in Derby. An argument erupted after the victim found messages from Mewis to other women on his mobile device. When she informed him she was leaving, Mewis responded with physical violence.
He grabbed her by the neck and threw her onto a bed. After loosening his grip, the woman collapsed against a wall, striking her head. She managed to escape the room and fled to the hotel reception area, where staff promptly contacted the police.
Victim Impact Statement
In a powerful statement, the victim described how the assault has profoundly affected her life. She revealed suffering from severe depression, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the attack.
"Since Jamie assaulted me, it has completely turned my life upside down," she said. "I have been left with physical and mental trauma. I barely leave the house and do not do group sessions with friends. There is no sentence that can improve my health, but I do not want this to happen to anyone else."
Legal Proceedings and Police Response
Mewis initially faced charges of intentional strangulation and assault by beating, which he denied. However, he later agreed to a plea deal, admitting to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was arrested three days after fleeing the hotel scene.
Detective Staff Investigator David Wright, who led the investigation for Derbyshire Constabulary, commended the victim's bravery. "Mewis is a violent offender who caused this woman to fear for her life," he stated. "The consequences of his behaviour are still being felt by her, as even after the physical wounds have healed, she is still dealing with emotional and mental trauma."
