Fugitive Jailed for Deliberately Driving into Birmingham Crowd
Callum Russell, a driver who intentionally targeted a group of people outside a nightspot in Sutton Coldfield, has been sentenced to prison after a shocking incident that left a teenager with serious injuries. The attack occurred on the evening of March 24, 2024, following a dispute at a local bar.
Details of the Deliberate Attack
Russell had driven his friends to a venue on Birmingham Road in Sutton Coldfield. After a fight broke out inside the bar, the group left and headed to another location on Mill Street. Upon arrival, Russell's two companions exited the vehicle and entered the establishment, while Russell remained behind the wheel.
He then drove back towards Birmingham Road and accelerated into a crowd of people at high speed. The vehicle struck multiple individuals, including an 18-year-old man who was thrown over the bonnet and windscreen, sustaining severe leg injuries. Following the collision, Russell abandoned the car on nearby Kathleen Road and returned on foot to Mill Street to rejoin his friends.
Police Investigation and Flight from Justice
CCTV footage captured Russell miming the action of twisting a steering wheel and laughing with his companions after the incident. A major police investigation was swiftly launched, with Russell identified as the primary suspect. In a bid to evade justice, he fled the country by ferry the following month and remained at large until his arrest at Birmingham Airport in August, upon arriving from Spain.
During police interviews, Russell offered no comment and showed no reaction when presented with footage of the attack. He later pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and wounding before Birmingham magistrates in January.
Court Sentencing and Police Statement
At Coventry Crown Court on Thursday, March 26, Russell was sentenced to four years and one month in prison. Additionally, he received a driving ban of four years and 14 days. PC Rachel Browne from Birmingham CID commented on the case, stating, "This was a truly shocking incident which could have resulted in fatalities, not only for the young man injured but also for other members of the public present."
She emphasized that the victim was entirely innocent, simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Browne added, "The true motive behind Russell's actions may never be known, as he provided no explanation. His decision to flee the country clearly demonstrates his criminal intent."
