A former England international and Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape at Stansted Airport, according to reports.
Arrest at Passport Control
The ex-football star was stopped by Border Force officers at a passport control point within the airport on Sunday night. His details triggered an alert indicating he was wanted by police in connection with a non-recent allegation of attempted rape, reported by a former partner. The intervention prevented him from boarding his flight.
Police Investigation Underway
Essex Police were notified and officers travelled to the airport to detain the suspect. He was taken to a local police station where his fingerprints, a DNA sample, and a mugshot were taken. The man was held for several hours before being released on bail. He is required to return in late February 2026 while investigations continue.

In a statement, Essex Police confirmed: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our enquiries." The force also confirmed that the complainant has been interviewed by specialist sex crimes officers and has been offered counselling and support.
