Family Members Receive Lengthy Prison Sentences for Violent Caravan Site Attack
Five men have been jailed following a brutal stabbing incident at The Griff caravan site in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of May 9 last year, left a man in his 20s with multiple stab wounds, forcing him to flee the scene blood-stained and wearing only his pants.
Details of the Violent Incident
According to Warwickshire Police, multiple assailants drove to the caravan site just after midnight and forcibly entered a caravan where a man and a woman, both in their 20s, were staying. The woman managed to escape through a window, while the male victim ran out of the caravan but was pursued and stabbed several times.
CCTV footage captured the harrowing moment as the victim ran away, visibly covered in blood and appearing to be wearing only his underwear. The attackers fled the site shortly after, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Arrests and Charges
The investigation led to the arrest of four members of the Galbraith family: James, 29, Michael, 27, Thomas, 24, and Anthony, 21. Each was charged with attempted murder and making threats to kill and was remanded in prison pending trial.
As the inquiry progressed, additional charges were brought against James Galbraith, 49, and Thomas McDonagh, 54, for conspiring to pervert the course of justice. This brought the total number of defendants to six.
Trial Outcomes and Sentencing
Following a seven-week trial at Warwick Crown Court that concluded in January, five of the men were found guilty. The judge directed the jury to find James Galbraith, 29, not guilty of attempted murder and making threats to kill, though he remained implicated in other aspects of the case.
On Friday, March 13, at Warwick Crown Court, the sentences were handed down:
- Michael Galbraith was jailed for 25 years, plus three years on extended license for attempted murder, and four years for threats to kill, to be served concurrently.
- Thomas Galbraith received an identical sentence of 25 years with three years on extended license for attempted murder, plus four years for threats to kill, concurrently.
- Anthony Galbraith was sentenced to 24 years for attempted murder and three years and six months for threats to kill, to be served concurrently.
- James Galbraith senior was jailed for three years and nine months for perverting the course of justice.
- Thomas McDonagh was sentenced to three years and six months for perverting the course of justice.
Police Response and Community Impact
Detective Constable Chloe Butcher, the officer in charge of the case, commented after the sentencing, emphasizing the thoroughness of the investigation. “This has been a thorough and careful investigation with many complexities,” she said. “The lengthy prison sentences handed down today reflect the seriousness of what happened. We hope these terms provide reassurance to our communities that we will always work tirelessly to identify those responsible for serious violence and ensure they are brought to justice.”
The case highlights ongoing efforts by Warwickshire Police to combat violent crime in the region, with this sentencing serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of such actions. The community in Nuneaton and surrounding areas has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
