Chaos Erupts at Birmingham Leisure Centre as Gang Discharges Fire Extinguisher
A group of youths caused significant disruption at Wyndley Leisure Centre in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, on Sunday, March 29, around 3:45 pm. The incident involved the discharge of a fire extinguisher and confrontations with visitors, leading to a police investigation into the anti-social behaviour.
Details of the Disruptive Incident
The gang entered the swimming baths area and began brandishing foam swimming aids, commonly known as 'noodles', which they took from behind the reception counter. They engaged in play-fighting with these devices and prodded a woman in the reception area. When she threatened to report them, one of the youths became more aggressive, escalating the situation.
One member of the group then picked up a fire extinguisher and sprayed a staff member before fleeing the scene. Additionally, the intruders banged on a window where young children were swimming, causing fear among those inside the facility.
Witness Accounts and Further Vandalism
The actions were witnessed and filmed by a 14-year-old boy who was sheltering from the rain at the centre. He described how the youths insulted the woman who tried to intervene and boasted about smashing a bus window, with one having blood on his hands as evidence of the vandalism. The boy later shared the video evidence with a staff member.
The boy's mother expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing that such behaviour was unexpected in a family-friendly environment like the leisure centre. She was particularly disturbed by the youths' pride in their destructive actions and the negative impact on other visitors.
Response from Authorities and Management
Andrew Bradshaw, the general manager of Birmingham Community Leisure Trust, strongly condemned the anti-social behaviour. He confirmed that the police had been contacted and assured the public that the centre takes such incidents very seriously, pledging full support for the ongoing police investigation.
West Midlands Police reported that four youths were involved in the incident. They hit people with pool noodles, wrapped one around a customer's neck, and set off the fire extinguisher. Enquiries are currently underway, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact them, quoting the relevant log number to assist in the investigation.
