Five individuals have been handed significant custodial sentences following a violent public disturbance in Birmingham, during which a firearm was discharged multiple times. The incident, which unfolded on Church Lane in the Stechford area, involved an armed confrontation between groups of men in broad daylight, creating a serious risk to public safety.

Details of the Violent Disorder in Stechford

The violent altercation erupted at approximately 3:30 PM on March 27 of the previous year. According to police evidence presented in court, the participants were armed with an array of dangerous weapons, including machetes, bats, and a firearm. The situation escalated dramatically when the gun was fired on several occasions during the melee.

Following the incident, two men presented themselves to emergency medical services for treatment. One individual sustained a gunshot wound, while the second suffered a laceration injury. West Midlands Police emphasised that the reckless actions of those involved had placed innocent members of the public at grave risk of serious harm.

Police Investigation and Court Proceedings

Detectives conducted a meticulous investigation, meticulously reviewing extensive CCTV footage which revealed that occupants from three separate vehicles were involved in the violent disorder. This evidence proved crucial in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

The case was heard at Birmingham Crown Court, where the five defendants faced justice for their roles in the alarming incident. On Friday, January 16, the court delivered its verdicts and imposed the following sentences:

  • Eessa Alam, aged 21, of Liddon Road, Birmingham, was found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition, possession of a bladed article, and two counts of attempted murder. He received a substantial prison sentence of 27 years.
  • Casiim Montgomery, aged 23, of Mulwych Road, Birmingham, admitted to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition, and committing grievous bodily harm (GBH). He was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment.
  • Hamaad Raaja, aged 18, of Jephson Drive, Birmingham, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. He received a sentence of two years and six months in a young offenders institution.
  • Mohammed Aadam, aged 21, of Audley Road, Birmingham, was found guilty of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. He was jailed for two years and four months.
  • Mohammed Zaheer, aged 27, also of Audley Road, Birmingham, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon. He was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison.

Police Statement on the Case

Detective Inspector Stacey Follows of West Midlands Police commented on the outcome, stating: "These five individuals carried out a senseless and violent attack in broad daylight, which put members of the public at serious risk. Thankfully, no innocent bystanders were physically injured during this terrifying incident."

The detective inspector further added: "The offenders demonstrated a high degree of malice and a clear intention to cause the most serious harm possible. Our officers worked extensively on this complex investigation to identify the suspects and bring them to justice. They will now rightly be spending a considerable period of time behind bars, reflecting the severity of their actions."
