Locksmith Scam Alert: UK Households Hit with £700 Bills After Low-Price Ads

A serious warning has been issued regarding locksmith scams targeting UK households, with rogue operators luring customers through deceptive low-price advertisements before dramatically inflating costs after completing the work.

Deceptive Pricing Tactics Exposed

The scam typically begins with locksmiths advertising services for as little as £49, only to present invoices of up to £700 once the job is finished. According to industry experts, these unscrupulous operators are exploiting vulnerable situations where people are locked out or have lost their keys.

Steffan George, managing director of the Master Locksmith Association (MLA), explained: "It's a distressed purchase. These are companies that are taking advantage of people in a vulnerable state because they're locked out or they've lost their keys."

Alarming Increase in Reported Scams

The MLA, a UK trade body, has reported a steady rise in scam complaints over the past five years, with a particularly concerning 66% increase in overcharging complaints between 2021 and 2025. This trend highlights the growing prevalence of these predatory practices across the country.

Industry Insiders Reveal Scam Methods

Craig Andres, a professional locksmith based in Bristol, described how these scam operators have earned the nickname "driller killers" within the industry. "A professional locksmith will usually have a lot of tools in his arsenal," he said. "But what the scammers do is just take out a 10mm drill bit and they just drill your lock because they know then they've got to replace it."

George further detailed the scam process: "These rogues, they're not asking questions. All it is a case of: 'Well, do you want our services?' They'll keep on repeating this low price, and that's it."

Final Bills Reach Staggering Amounts

Andres revealed how the costs escalate: "Then they'll put VAT on it. The bill will usually end up being around somewhere between £300 and £1,000, depending on how badly you get stung." This represents a markup of up to ten times the originally advertised price in some cases.

Timely Warning During Economic Strain

The warning comes at a particularly difficult time for many UK households struggling with financial pressures during the ongoing Cost of Living crisis. These scams compound existing financial challenges for vulnerable consumers.

Platform Response to Scam Ads

A Google spokesperson addressed the issue of scam advertisements on their platforms: "Protecting users is our top priority and we have strict ads policies that govern the types of ads and advertisers we allow on our platforms."

Consumers are advised to exercise caution when seeking emergency locksmith services, verify credentials through reputable trade associations, and be wary of prices that seem unrealistically low compared to market rates.
