Birmingham Man Receives 14-Year Sentence for Deadly Stolen Car Incident
A man has been handed a substantial prison term after a horrific crash involving a stolen vehicle in Birmingham resulted in the death of his close friend. Rhemeese Lawrence-Hayden, now 28 years old, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, 26 March, following his guilty plea to causing death by dangerous driving.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The fatal incident occurred shortly after 10:45 PM on 2 October 2022, on Linden Road near the junction with Beaumont Road in the Bournville area. Lawrence-Hayden, who was 24 at the time and held only a provisional driving licence, was behind the wheel of a stolen Ford Focus. He lost control of the car while driving at high speed towards Cotteridge.
The vehicle struck the central reservation, mounted a curb, and then collided with a tree. His 26-year-old friend, David Brennan, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained serious injuries from the impact. Despite being rushed to hospital, Mr. Brennan succumbed to his injuries and tragically passed away. Lawrence-Hayden emerged from the crash without any physical harm.
Police Investigation and Evidence
West Midlands Police conducted a thorough investigation into the crash. Analysis of CCTV footage from a nearby property revealed that the stolen car was travelling at an average speed between 82 mph and 102 mph in a zone with a 30 mph limit. Following the collision, Lawrence-Hayden was picked up by another vehicle and fled the scene, leaving Mr. Brennan behind with critical injuries.
Forensic examination played a crucial role in the case. Saliva matching Lawrence-Hayden was detected on the driver's airbag, and phone data placed him in the vicinity of the crash at the time it occurred. Additionally, he was identified by a witness in an ID parade as the driver of the vehicle on that fateful night, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Court Sentencing and Police Statement
At Birmingham Crown Court, Lawrence-Hayden was sentenced to 14 years in prison and banned from driving for 12 years. Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes of West Midlands Police commented on the case, stating, "Lawrence-Hayden drove at very high speed with no thought for the safety of his friend Mr. Brennan or any other road users. His actions were totally reckless."
He added, "Following the crash he fled, leaving Mr. Brennan at the scene with very serious injuries. He will spend many years behind bars where he can reflect on his actions on that night. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Brennan's family. I would like to thank everyone who assisted us in our investigations, including witnesses who provided statements and whose evidence helped to convict Lawrence-Hayden."
This case underscores the severe consequences of dangerous driving and the importance of road safety measures in communities across Birmingham.
