Birmingham Man Receives Seven-Year Sentence for Violent Shop Robbery
A Birmingham man has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison after a violent robbery in which a shop worker was stabbed in the stomach. The incident took place at a shop on Heathland Avenue in Shard End, with West Midlands Police responding to the scene shortly after 10am on Thursday, February 5.
Details of the Attack and Investigation
The staff member, a man, was stabbed during a confrontation after the assailant attempted to leave the shop without paying for cleaning products. He was taken to hospital for treatment and is continuing his recovery, although he was not seriously injured. An immediate investigation was launched, with officers reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to piece together the events.
Detectives determined that the stabbing occurred during a robbery, where the perpetrator entered the shop, took items from the shelves, and then tried to flee without payment. When confronted by the shop worker, he pulled out a knife, stabbed him, and escaped with the stolen goods.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Through their investigation, police quickly identified Reece Allen, 31, of Heathland Avenue, as the suspect. A public appeal was issued to help locate him, and thanks to information from the community, he was found and arrested. While in police custody, Allen assaulted a staff member, adding to his charges.
Officers also linked him to a previous shop theft during the inquiry. Allen pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including robbery, wounding, possession of a knife, theft, and assaulting an emergency worker. At Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, March 20, he was sentenced to a total of seven years and six months in prison.
Police Response and Community Impact
PC Nolan from the Birmingham Neighbourhood Crime Team commented on the case, stating, "This was a completely unacceptable attack on a member of staff in a shop who was simply doing their job. Any assault on a shop worker is unacceptable, but for Allen to have used a knife makes this even more shocking."
He added, "I am pleased that we were able to identify and arrest him quickly, and I thank the public for their help with this. Allen has also rightly been sentenced for assaulting one of our staff members whilst in custody – again something we never tolerate. We are pleased he will spend years behind bars and it is clear the severity of his crimes has been recognised."
The case highlights ongoing concerns about violence against retail workers and the importance of community cooperation in solving crimes. West Midlands Police have emphasized their commitment to tackling such incidents and ensuring perpetrators face justice.
