A police investigation is underway after the body of a man was discovered on the grounds of a secondary school in Wolverhampton.
Emergency Services Called to School Field
Emergency services were called to Smestow Academy on Windmill Crescent, Castlecroft, at approximately 10.40am on Monday, January 19. The call concerned a medical emergency in a field adjacent to the school.
West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the location. A distinctive blue forensic tent was later erected near a set of goalposts on the school's playing field, which lies next to the Smestow Valley Nature Reserve.
School Closure and Police Enquiries
As a direct consequence of the incident, Smestow Academy took the decision to close to all pupils from 1pm on Monday afternoon. A notice posted on the school's website cited an "unconnected police incident" as the reason for the early closure.
West Midlands Police confirmed they are working to establish the man's identity and the full circumstances surrounding his death. Officers remained at the scene throughout the day as enquiries commenced. The force has stated that the death is currently being treated as unexplained.
Appeal for Information from the Public
Police have launched an appeal for information from the public. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We're currently at Smestow Academy after a discovery of the body in the grounds. Enquiries are now under way to confirm the man’s identity and the circumstances around his death."
Anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact the force through the following methods:
