Detectives from West Mercia Police have launched a major investigation into a series of linked burglaries across the West Midlands, with a particular focus on Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The force is urgently appealing for public assistance to identify and locate a gang of masked thieves who have been targeting residential properties under the cover of darkness.
Distinctive Red Gloves and CCTV Evidence
The suspects, who are believed to be white males in their late teens or early twenties, have been captured on multiple CCTV recordings. Their most notable identifying feature is the consistent use of distinctive red gloves during the break-ins. The gang has been observed entering homes that appear unlit or vacant, often gaining access through the rear of properties.
Stolen Items and Police Response
Investigators have confirmed that the burglaries have resulted in the theft of significant quantities of jewellery, cash, and other high-value personal possessions. Detective Inspector Dave Knight of West Mercia Police stated that the incidents are being treated as connected and that a comprehensive investigation is underway.
"Our communities can expect to see increased patrols in the areas being targeted," DI Knight emphasised. "We're urging anyone who sees anything suspicious or who can provide any information to please get in touch."
Security Advice for Homeowners
While stressing that the responsibility for the crimes lies solely with the offenders, police have issued detailed security guidance to help residents protect their properties. The gang appears to specifically target homes without interior lighting during evening hours.
- Consider installing timer switches for interior lights to create the appearance of occupancy
- Ensure all patio doors and rear entrances are securely locked, as these are common entry points
- Keep valuable items stored in outbuildings, garages, and sheds properly secured when not in use
- Install motion-sensor CCTV systems that can be monitored via mobile devices
- Photograph valuable possessions or mark them with forensic solutions like SmartWater for identification
Important Safety Warning
Police have issued a crucial safety warning to the public: "If you do come across anyone attempting to steal your property or breaking into your home, please do not approach them. Call 999 immediately and report it to us."
