A violent offender from the Midlands has been sentenced to prison after deliberately driving his car onto a pavement to strike a man he had been fighting with, despite later claiming the victim "jumped in front of the car." Andrew Paul Whalley, aged 34 and from Nantwich in Cheshire, carried out the shocking attack in April 2024 following a brawl that began inside a shop on Talke Pits High Street.
Escalation of Violence Leads to Dangerous Driving Incident
The confrontation quickly spilled out into the street, where Whalley escalated the situation by getting into his blue Vauxhall vehicle. According to Staffordshire Police, just five minutes after leaving the initial scene, Whalley drove the car at high speed directly onto the pavement where his victim was standing. This reckless and intentional act caused the man to sustain serious injuries that are expected to have long-lasting effects.
Following the impact, Whalley exited his vehicle and pursued the injured victim around parked cars along the street, demonstrating a continued intent to cause harm. The violent episode only concluded when authorities intervened and arrested Whalley for his actions.

During police custody, Whalley initially attempted to justify his actions by asserting that the victim had jumped in front of his car to block him. However, he subsequently refused to cooperate further by answering "no comment" to all questions posed by investigators. Despite his attempts to evade responsibility, substantial evidence was gathered by law enforcement.
Whalley ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including section 18 wounding with intent, affray, and driving a motor vehicle dangerously. His case was heard at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where on Monday, March 23, he received a prison sentence of five years and four months for his crimes.

Sergeant Gail Tolley of the Stoke South local policing team emphasized the severity of Whalley's actions in a statement following the sentencing. "Whalley subjected his victim to a spontaneous and violent attack which has left him with long-lasting injuries," she stated. "We worked tirelessly to gather evidence against Whalley and I am glad he has now been jailed for his actions."
