Midland Mum's Heroic Rescue as Tumble Dryer Fire Engulfs Family Home

A heroic mother-of-three from Derby has revealed how she saved her entire family after their tumble dryer suddenly burst into flames, leaving their home severely damaged. Hannah Foster, 36, believes the family is "lucky to be alive" following the terrifying incident that occurred in the early hours of last Friday morning.

The Terrifying Night of the Fire

Hannah Foster, a Special Educational Needs teaching assistant, was preparing for a weekend camping trip when disaster struck. She had been running the tumble dryer for approximately twenty minutes to dry the final items before packing. At around midnight, her twelve-year-old son Kieran rushed into her bedroom, urgently reporting that he could see smoke coming through the floorboards.

"I rushed downstairs and got to the living room and there was a wall of flame and smoke in front of me," Hannah recounted. "I tried to wake Tom who was asleep on the sofa but he wouldn't wake up. It was terrifying. The smoke was really choking me but I just shook Tom shouting at him to wake up until he finally did."

Family Evacuation and Fire Crew Response

Once her partner Tom was awake, the couple quickly woke their seventeen-year-old son Jack. Hannah then grabbed their two-year-old daughter Maddison from the bedroom, and the entire family dashed outside to safety. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured, with Tom only suffering singed hair.

Fire crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service raced to the semi-detached property on Riddings in Allestree, Derby. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus spent more than an hour battling the blaze, using three hose reel jets and one main jet to extinguish the flames.

Extensive Damage and Investigation Findings

The fire caused substantial destruction to the family home. The conservatory, where the tumble dryer had been plugged in, was completely gutted, along with the kitchen and the entire ground floor. Hannah, who had no contents insurance, was assessed by paramedics at the scene but thankfully escaped without physical injury.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that their investigation concluded the most likely cause was accidental ignition from the tumble dryer. A spokesperson stated that all occupants were safely out of the property upon the arrival of fire crews and no injuries were reported.

Possible Cause and Safety Warning

Hannah explained that she had used the Indesit tumble dryer for several years without any previous issues. "The tumble dryer was gifted to me years ago and I've never had any problems with it," she said. "The fire investigators said it could have overheated by a toy possibly falling behind it. Sometimes there is also a build-up of lint inside the machine which falls under the draw which I always clean before using it."

Aftermath and Community Support

The family is currently living with relatives while they search for a new property. Hannah and Tom, who works in the construction industry, lost most of their belongings and clothing in the fire. In response, Hannah has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to replace their essential items.

This frightening incident serves as a stark reminder about the importance of regular appliance maintenance and fire safety precautions in the home. The family's quick thinking and Hannah's heroic actions undoubtedly prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
