Specific Vehicle Types Targeted by Criminals as Theft Rates Surge

New theft data indicates that criminals are increasingly focusing on specific types of vehicles, with particular models rising sharply on most stolen lists in recent years. This trend has seen these vehicles become firm favourites among thieves, leading to a significant increase in thefts from driveways and roads outside homes across the UK.

Pick-Up Trucks and Vans Emerge as Prime Targets

Figures suggest that crooks are now heavily targeting pick-up trucks, with models like the Toyota Hilux Invincible X and the Nissan Navara Tekna appearing at the top of theft lists. Vans are also commonly stolen, with the Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter ranking highly among the most nicked vehicles.

The data, released by the DVLA following a freedom of information request by vehicle recovery firm Tracker, highlights a worrying shift in criminal behaviour. Thefts of the Toyota C-HR Dynamic HEV CVT have surged in recent times, adding to the growing list of targeted models.

Ford Fiesta Remains Overall Most Stolen Car

Despite the rise in pick-up and van thefts, the UK's most stolen car overall remains the Ford Fiesta. Experts note that Ford's decision to stop manufacturing the iconic Fiesta has sparked a surge in demand for parts, making these vehicles an even more attractive target for thieves seeking valuable components.

Other commonly stolen vehicles include the Toyota RAV4, Ford Puma, and Nissan Juke, according to industry analysis. Clive Wain, head of police liaison at Tracker, commented on the findings, stating that while premium car brands like BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Toyota dominate their stolen vehicle recoveries, intelligence suggests specific models are particularly favoured by criminals.

Industry Response to Rising Vehicle Theft

Wain emphasized the devastating financial and emotional impact of vehicle theft on motorists, noting that Tracker continues to forge industry partnerships and work tirelessly with UK police forces to recover stolen vehicles and return them to their rightful owners. The company's network provides crucial intelligence about theft patterns, helping to identify which vehicles are most at risk.

This new data serves as a stark warning to owners of these targeted vehicle types to enhance their security measures. As theft methods become more sophisticated, vehicle owners are encouraged to consider additional protective measures to safeguard their property from increasingly determined criminals.
