Police Flood Routes for Safe Chaand Raat and Eid in Birmingham

Major Police Operation Planned for Chaand Raat and Eid-Al-Fitr in Birmingham

West Midlands Police will deploy a significant number of officers to key routes across Birmingham to ensure the safe celebration of Chaand Raat and Eid-Al-Fitr this week. This pre-planned operation, developed in partnership with Birmingham City Council, faith leaders, local businesses, and volunteers, aims to address issues that have marred previous celebrations.

Targeted Areas and Enforcement Actions

The joint operation will focus on three main corridors: Ladypool Road, Stratford Road, and Alum Rock Road. Police will be cracking down on illegal and dangerous driving, excessive noise, and nuisance behaviour as Ramadan concludes. Officers have been given authority to seize problem vehicles where necessary.

Chief Inspector Andy Moseley, Commander for the Chaand Raat operation, stated: "Our clear focus is on keeping everyone as safe as possible, and we have a comprehensively planned operation running. We understand the key areas to focus on, and you can expect to see more officers present and ready to help should you need it."

Multi-Agency Partnership Approach

The police will be working alongside council partners including:

  • Trading Standards teams
  • Environmental Health officers
  • Parking enforcement colleagues

This coordinated effort aims to reduce illegal market trading, anti-social behaviour, and parking problems that have affected these areas during previous Eid celebrations.

Community Engagement Throughout Ramadan

Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, council teams have been actively engaging with community leaders, businesses, volunteers, and residents to understand concerns and prepare coordinated support. This work will continue as celebrations approach, with a focus on:

  1. Promoting safety for all celebrants
  2. Managing traffic and parking pressures
  3. Tackling nuisance behaviour effectively

Councillor Jamie Scott, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, emphasized: "Eid is a cherished time for families across Birmingham, and we want people to feel safe, respected, and supported as they come together to celebrate. We've listened closely to residents and businesses during Ramadan, and we are acting on what matters most to them."

Addressing Historical Issues

In previous years, celebration areas have been plagued by:

  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Excessive noise from vehicles
  • Reckless driving
  • Car horns blaring into early morning hours

The dedicated Roads Policing Unit will be highly visible in target areas, specifically targeting reckless drivers. Chaand Raat is expected to fall on Thursday, March 19, with celebrations continuing through Eid-Al-Fitr.

Council officers will be working on the ground throughout the celebrations to address issues such as parking, noise, and nuisance behaviour with police support. These celebrations bring significant joy and community spirit to Birmingham, and authorities are committed to ensuring they can be enjoyed responsibly by everyone involved.
