A serving police constable from West Midlands Police finds himself on the wrong side of the law after being charged with assaulting a teenage boy.
PC Oliver Wilsher, attached to the Coventry neighbourhood policing team, stands accused of common assault following an incident involving a 15-year-old male. The alleged assault occurred during what should have been a routine police interaction.
Independent Investigation Launched
The case came to light after West Midlands Police made a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). This standard procedure ensures transparent handling of serious complaints against police officers.
Following a thorough investigation by the police watchdog, the evidence was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which authorised the assault charge against the officer.
Legal Proceedings Underway
PC Wilsher is scheduled to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court next month to answer the charge. The 31-year-old officer has been placed on restricted duties pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed the force is cooperating fully with the legal process, stating: "We expect the highest standards of professional behaviour from all our officers and staff."
Community Impact
The case has raised questions about police conduct and accountability within the local community. Such incidents inevitably test public confidence in law enforcement, particularly when involving young people.
Local community leaders have called for due process to be followed while emphasising the importance of trust between police and the communities they serve.
The outcome of this case will be closely watched by both law enforcement professionals and community advocates across the West Midlands region.
