The force cautions that criminals are actively exploiting the post-Christmas rush for discounts, targeting unsuspecting consumers through sophisticated scams.

Detective Constable Rachel Hensley, from the force's Economic Crime Unit, stated that the period is a prime target for fraudsters. "Boxing Day is a prime target for online scammers," she said. "With millions of people eager to snap up discounted goods, the internet becomes a breeding ground for fraudulent activity."
She explained that these criminals deploy a range of tactics, including creating convincing fake retail websites and sending phishing emails designed to mimic legitimate retailers. These communications often contain links to fraudulent sites or aim to harvest personal banking details directly.

To help the public protect themselves, West Midlands Police have issued a list of ten crucial safety tips for online shopping:
1. Verify Website Addresses: Always ensure the web address begins with "https" and shows a padlock symbol. Avoid clicking links in emails or texts; type the retailer's official address directly into your browser.
2. Beware of Phishing: Be extremely cautious of unsolicited messages offering exclusive deals, whether via email, text, or social media. They are often attempts to steal payment information.
3. Use Secure Payment Methods: Opt for payment methods with built-in buyer protection, such as credit cards or PayPal. Never transfer money directly to a seller's bank account.
4. Limit Personal Data: Only provide mandatory information at checkout. Avoid creating unnecessary accounts and do not allow your browser to store payment details.
5. Research Products and Sellers: Check independent consumer reviews before purchasing to identify potential scams or unreliable sellers.
