West Midlands Police Arrest Seven Drivers Daily for Impaired Driving in 2026

West Midlands Police (WMP) have revealed alarming statistics, showing that they have carried out more than 600 arrests this year for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The force has made a total of 681 arrests since the beginning of January, which equates to an average of seven arrests per day so far in 2026.

Bank Holiday Warning Issued to Drivers

WMP disclosed these findings as they issued a stern warning to drivers ahead of the bank holiday weekend. The police are urging individuals not to get behind the wheel if they have consumed drugs or alcohol, emphasizing the severe consequences of such actions.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated: "We’ll be continuing our crackdown on drink and drug drivers, and want everyone to go home and not spend the night in custody with our officers. While our custody suites do have beds – we’d advise you against a stay."

Severe Penalties for Impaired Driving

Drivers caught operating a vehicle while intoxicated face harsh penalties, including a criminal record, a potential prison sentence, an unlimited fine, and an automatic driving ban for at least one year. The maximum penalty can be up to six months in prison.

The spokesperson added: "Don’t let a split decision ruin yours or someone else’s life. Drink and drug driving destroys lives, not just for the driver, but innocent people who are killed or injured because of other’s actions, as well as friends and family of everyone involved."

Ongoing Police Efforts to Ensure Road Safety

West Midlands Police emphasized that officers from across the entire force are consistently working to crack down on anyone found to be over the legal limit. This includes call handlers, specialist traffic teams, response units, and neighbourhood officers.

"We’re not there to catch you out, but instead ensure everyone is safe," the spokesperson explained. "If you are over the drink or drug limit you will be prosecuted and could receive a criminal record, a maximum penalty of six months in prison, unlimited fine and an automatic driving ban of at least one year."

Public Urged to Report Suspected Offenders

The police are encouraging the public to report any suspected drink or drug drivers immediately. If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, you should call 999 without delay to help prevent potential accidents and save lives.

This proactive approach aims to reduce the number of incidents and promote safer roads throughout the West Midlands region, especially during high-risk periods like bank holidays.
