Sniffer Dogs Lead to Major Illegal Tobacco Bust in Walsall

Specially-trained sniffer dogs have helped uncover a significant haul of illegal tobacco products in Walsall, with more than £70,000 worth of cigarettes, tobacco and disposable vapes seized from local shops. The operation, conducted by Walsall Trading Standards in partnership with West Midlands Police, targeted six retail premises following intelligence received from the public.

Hidden Stashes Discovered in Unusual Locations

During the searches on Monday, February 9, officers discovered illegal products hidden in various creative locations. Griff, one of the specially-trained sniffer dogs, detected a concealed storeroom that contained thousands of illegal cigarettes, tobacco and single-use vapes - products that were banned in 2025. The hidden room, which contained a sofa and laptop, would likely have gone undetected without the dog's keen sense of smell.

Other unusual hiding places included a toilet cistern and a wastepaper bin, where additional illegal tobacco products were recovered. In total, the operation resulted in the seizure of more than 65,000 cigarettes, 13kg of hand-rolling tobacco and 700 disposable vapes from three of the six shops visited.

Operation Fearless Targets Illicit Tobacco Trade

The bust forms part of Operation Fearless, a coordinated exercise led by Trading Standards that involves multiple agencies including police and public health officials. The operation aims to crack down on the illicit tobacco trade, which authorities say is often linked to organized crime including human trafficking, drugs and even terrorism.

Cllr Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities at Walsall Council, praised the efforts of those involved: "Allowing this sort of crime to go on in Walsall is simply not an option. I want to thank the Trading Standards team, West Midlands Police, and of course Griff, Bran and Cooper for their hard work in sniffing out these products and getting them off our streets."

Public Health Concerns and Ongoing Investigations

A council spokesperson highlighted the significant public health risks associated with illegal tobacco: "Illegal tobacco poses significant risks to public health, as its ingredients are not known or regulated and may contain higher levels of harmful chemicals."

The operation aligns with Walsall's Tobacco Control Plan, which focuses on reducing tobacco consumption, enhancing local regulation and enforcement, preventing residents from starting smoking, and improving stop smoking services for those in greatest need.

Cllr Hicken added: "Trading Standards have taken a strong approach to this issue and will continue to use every enforcement technique available to disrupt it. I commend them for their tenacity. Products like these can lead to anti-social behaviour and damage our community, so removing them is vital."

Further investigations are ongoing as authorities work to tackle the supply of illegal tobacco in the Walsall area. The council confirmed that all six premises were selected based on intelligence indicating illegal products were being sold, with illegal goods found in three of the shops visited and two associated vehicles.
