Life Sentence for Teenager Who Murdered Stepfather and Family Dog in Brutal Stabbing Frenzy
A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrific murder of his stepfather and the family dog in a sustained and frenzied knife attack at their Derbyshire home. Logan Procter, who was 19 at the time of the offences, used two knives to inflict more than 70 wounds on Christopher Owen, 57, and 15 stab injuries to their Jack Russell terrier, Poppy, on the evening of October 22 last year.
Chilling Details of Premeditation and Motive
Derby Crown Court heard that Procter had compiled multiple "kill lists" on his mobile phone, detailing various methods of killing and naming specific individuals. Prosecutor Maryam Syed KC disclosed that one list for "home" included his mother and another family member, with "Chris" at the top. Further lists for "work" and "college" named 20 additional people in total.
Procter told the court he believed committing the murders would make him feel "unique" and carried them out for the "thrill," stating it was "one way he was good at something." He had amassed a collection of knives and Samurai swords at the family home on Valley Road in Shirebrook, and declared he "wanted to end so many lives."
Calm 999 Call and Disturbing Searches
Following the attack, Procter dialled 999 with "extreme calmness," detailing how the dog had "screamed" during the assault and explaining he "wanted it to be quick." During the call, he stated: "I wanted to end so many lives. I planned to go off so much further than this."
Prosecutors revealed that searches found on his electronic devices were related to torture and cannibalism, adding to the disturbing nature of the case. Procter described his stepfather, who had been part of his life for a decade, as "stronger than I thought," adding that he didn't think "it would go that far."
Sentencing and Victim Impact
Judge Shaun Smith KC sentenced Procter to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years and 10 months, describing the killings as "brutal, sustained and frenzied." He noted that "no-one foresaw the tragedy that was to unfold in terrifying events at your home."
In a heartbreaking victim impact statement, Procter's mother and Mr Owen's partner, Alison Owen, wrote that her son had "never shown any form of anger or violence in all his life." She stated: "The outcome of this situation will bring me no comfort at all because I have lost everything I hold dear to me – a precious partner Chris and my precious boy Logan. Chris was kind, protective, loyal and truly a beautiful gentleman. We should have had so many more years together."
Defence and Police Response
In defence, Clive Stockwell KC described Procter as a "vulnerable young man" who had been bullied and struggled with mental health issues. He noted that both Procter and Mr Owen shared an interest in collecting knives, with Mr Owen purchasing knives for Procter's collection.
Detective Inspector Kane Martin of Derbyshire Police commented: "The murder of Christopher Owen has devastated his family and friends and throughout this investigation seeking the truth for them has always been our focus. What they will never know is why Mr Owen was killed as, while Logan Procter has taken responsibility for his murder, he has never given a reason for why he carried out the attack."
The court heard that Procter was aware that Mr Owen's older brother had been murdered in Dudley in 2007, for which two people were convicted at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Procter admitted murder and showed no emotion as he was sentenced, wearing a prison-issue grey tracksuit in the dock.
