Emergency Services Rush to New Year's Day Blaze
A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering extensive burns when a tent was set on fire in the centre of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
Staffordshire Police were called to New Hall Street at around midday on Thursday, 1 January 2026, following reports of the blaze. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene to treat the victim.
Victim Airlifted to Hospital with Serious Injuries
The woman sustained what police have described as 'extensive' burns to her arms and legs during the terrifying ordeal. She was airlifted to hospital for urgent medical treatment and remains in a critical but stable condition.
Officers closed off Marsh Street at its junction with Trinity Street to allow emergency crews to work at the scene and begin their initial investigations into the cause of the fire.
Police Launch Public Appeal for Information
Staffordshire Police have now launched an urgent appeal for information to piece together the events that led to the serious assault. A spokesperson stated their inquiries are continuing and asked for the public's help.
They are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage, to come forward immediately. Information can be provided by calling 101 and quoting incident number 407 of 1 January.
