Tributes have continued to pour in for a 'kind' and much-loved pub boss who died in a Bank Holiday tragedy that sparked a murder investigation.
Matt O'Gara was critically injured during an incident at wine bar Ricco and Loren in Lichfield's Market Street on Sunday night (May 24). Mr O'Gara, who was director of The Plough pub in nearby village Huddlesford, sadly died from his injuries in hospital two days later.
Billy Allison, 36, from Solihull, appeared at North Staffordshire Justice Centre yesterday accused of murder and grievous bodily harm with intent. He was remanded into custody.
In an emotional post online, Mr O'Gara's mum, Jane, said she would never get over her son's sudden death. 'You was too young to leave us,' she said. 'Forever in our hearts.'
Tributes have continued to pour in overnight. Lichfield Rugby Club told BirminghamLive Mr O'Gara was a 'close friend' and that his passing had been 'devastating for family, friends, colleagues' and the whole of his pub community.
Posting an image of Mr O'Gara to its Facebook page, the Tamworth Road club described Mr O'Gara as being 'pivotal in the introductions of new members, businesses and sponsors'. And, commenting underneath the club's post, dozens of people shared their touching memories of him.
Hannah Inwood wrote: 'I remember Matt from a very long time ago from back in Solihull. Always a really nice guy.' Paul John said: 'Absolutely heartbreaking. [I] had good times with Matt. This shouldn't have ever happened.' Bryanna Buswell added: 'One of the nicest, honest guys you could care to meet. RIP buddy. My heart [is] breaking for you.' Jordi Burgess said the 'lovely' pub boss had 'got us in for Mother's Day at the Plough' when it was 'fully booked'. She added: 'How tragic. So sorry for your loss.'
Allison, who spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth yesterday, is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court later today.
