Violent Mob Targets Registered Sex Offender's Home in Aberdeenshire
An angry mob gathered outside the home of a man on the sex offenders register in Moray, Aberdeenshire, leading to violent clashes where fireworks were flung at police officers. The incident occurred in Buckie, escalating over several days into a dangerous confrontation that required specialist riot police intervention.
Days of Escalating Tensions
Local residents first assembled outside the semi-detached property on Buckie's Well Road on Sunday, March 29. By Monday, another group had gathered, chanting "Get the beast out now!" The situation intensified on Tuesday when more people congregated outside the home, resulting in a stand-off with police that continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning.
During the violent scenes, riot vans were vandalized with fireworks and flares lobbed toward officers and the property. Dozens of riot police equipped with batons and shields were deployed to manage the escalating disorder. A 45-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the violent protest and possession of an offensive weapon. He is scheduled to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Thursday, April 2.
Background of the Occupant
The occupant of the property is a 44-year-old man who was recently discovered to have child abuse images during a police raid. He pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children, including some classified as Category A, which represents the most serious category. The majority of these images were inaccessible. As a result, he was added to the sex offenders register for three years.
It is understood that the man was escorted from his home in the early hours of Wednesday and taken into police custody. Footage from the scene on Tuesday night showed a flare landing in the garden of the property, where numerous riot police were stationed to guard the entrance.
Police Response and Condemnation
Chief Inspector Mike McKenzie, Local Area Commander for Moray, strongly condemned the violent behavior. He stated that this was the third such incident in the area since the weekend, but the first to descend into such violent disorder. McKenzie emphasized that this type of conduct is utterly unacceptable, not only subjecting officers to extreme aggression but also posing serious risks of fire or damage to neighboring properties.
Police inquiries are ongoing to identify all individuals involved in Tuesday night's events, including a review of extensive footage from the area. A continued police presence will remain in Buckie to reassure the local community and address any concerns. Authorities are working closely with partners to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents.
