Walsall Father Found Guilty of Murdering Five-Week-Old Premature Baby

A father from Walsall who regularly smoked cannabis has been convicted of murdering his five-week-old premature daughter, who suffered nearly 50 rib fractures during her short life.

Sean Jefferson, 35, was found guilty of murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a seven-week trial at Stafford Crown Court. The jury returned unanimous verdicts on Monday, March 16, 2026.

Catastrophic Injuries to Premature Infant

The victim, Darcy-Leigh Jefferson, was born by caesarean section at Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield on February 20, 2022, weighing just 4lbs. Medical experts testified that she died from a catastrophic brain injury caused by either violent shaking or her head being struck against a surface.

Post-mortem examination revealed the infant had sustained 47 rib fractures, believed to have occurred when her chest was tightly squeezed. Additional fractures to both legs may have resulted from her body being pulled, twisted, or shaken.

Parents' Behavior and Court Proceedings

During the trial, jurors heard that Jefferson smoked cannabis regularly, while the child's mother, Amy Clark, 34, consumed significant amounts of alcohol and used cocaine during her pregnancy and after giving birth.

Clark, of Enots Close in Lichfield, was convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child and two counts of causing or allowing serious harm to a child. Prosecutors had dropped murder and manslaughter charges against her during closing arguments the previous week.

Jefferson, wearing a grey tracksuit and blue Adidas jacket, shook his head in the dock as the jury of eight women and four men delivered their verdicts. Clark, dressed in a green jumper, black trousers, and beige coat, put her hand to her face.

Emergency Call and Medical Response

The tragedy unfolded on March 27, 2022, when Jefferson dialed 999 at approximately 7:20 AM, telling the operator: "Literally, she was fine, and then she was coughing and some snot came out of her nose, and she literally stopped breathing, literally on the spot."

Both parents had been with their daughter at Clark's former residence on Hudson Drive in Burntwood that morning. The baby was rushed to hospital but died two days later on March 29.

Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC informed jurors that Jefferson's account of events "did not account for the fatal head injury" sustained by Darcy-Leigh.

Sentencing and Emotional Aftermath

Judge Mrs Justice Brunner KC announced that sentencing for both defendants would occur on a date to be determined. Jefferson now faces a mandatory life sentence for murder.

The jury foreperson wiped her eyes as the judge thanked the panel for their attention throughout what she described as an "upsetting" case. The emotional toll of the proceedings was visible throughout the courtroom as details of the infant's suffering were presented.

This case highlights the devastating consequences of substance abuse combined with violent behavior toward vulnerable children, particularly premature infants requiring special care and protection.
