West Mercia Police have launched a major investigation after a series of violent incidents in Worcester city centre, which they believe are all linked to a dispute within the local homeless community. The probe includes a murder, a suspected arson attack at a Muslim community centre, and an attempted robbery, all occurring within hours of each other.

The sequence of events began in the early hours of Thursday, February 26. At approximately 2:30 AM, a dispute broke out between a group of men in Pierpoint Street, leaving one man injured. He was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Police identified those involved through CCTV as members of the homeless community.
Just a few hours later, at around 6:00 AM, emergency services responded to a report of a fire in a garage on Surman Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a body, prompting the launch of a murder investigation. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.
Shortly after attending the Surman Street scene, police were called to the Unity Community Hub on Hill Street, which is part of the local mosque, following a suspected arson attack. Then, at just after 8:00 AM, an attempted robbery was reported in Spring Lane. In this incident, a man in his car was threatened by another man wielding a knife who tried to steal the vehicle. The victim suffered minor injuries.

Chief Superintendent Edd Williams stated that the force believes all these incidents are connected to the earlier dispute within Worcester's homeless community. A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. He is also being questioned on suspicion of arson, robbery, and assaulting a police officer.
"We know these incidents have caused considerable concern to the community," said Chief Supt Williams. "We want to offer reassurance about the steps we are taking and what we know so far. Whilst we are keeping an open mind, at this stage we do not believe these incidents to be race or religiously motivated or linked to any events taking place in Worcester over the weekend."
To address community fears, safer neighbourhood officers will be on patrol across the city centre and at the locations of these incidents in the coming days. Residents are encouraged to speak to officers on patrol or contact the safer neighbourhood team via the police website if they have concerns.
