Campaigners Remain Defiant in Battle to Save Historic White Lion Pub

The Friends of the White Lion group in Caldmore is standing firm in its fight to protect the historic White Lion pub, which has been closed since 2020. Despite a long wait for a decision on their local listing application, the community campaigners remain determined to secure the pub's future.

Lengthy Wait for Local Listing Decision

The group submitted their application for a local listing in August 2024, but it has yet to be scheduled for committee review by Walsall Council. Chair Mark Whitehouse emphasized the importance of this step, stating, "If it gets a local listing it adds an extra layer of protection. It just strengthens our argument that it is of importance." The council has confirmed that a report will be presented to the planning committee this summer, following heritage assessment work completed in 2021/22.

Fears of Deterioration and Redevelopment

Campaigners are concerned that the current owners, 88 Capital Investments Ltd, might allow the Sandwell Street building to deteriorate. This could potentially force planners to approve redevelopment plans, threatening the pub's historic character. The group has been battling for over five years since the pub's closure, recently achieving Asset of Community Value status after an initial refusal by the council.

Unwavering Commitment from the Community

Mark Whitehouse expressed the group's defiant stance, saying, "We're still here after five years, and we'll be here in five years' time. We won't let it go without a struggle." This persistence highlights the deep community investment in preserving this local landmark. The campaign underscores broader issues of heritage protection and community resilience in the face of development pressures.

The ongoing efforts by the Friends of the White Lion serve as a testament to the power of grassroots activism in safeguarding cultural and historical assets for future generations.
