British Gas has issued a warning that customers could inadvertently be charged for energy used by previous occupants if they fail to take prompt meter readings when moving into a new home. The energy supplier, which serves customers in Birmingham, emphasized the importance of recording meter readings upon arrival to avoid paying for someone else's usage.
Social Media Advice from British Gas
In a social media post, a British Gas employee shared essential tips for new homeowners. "Planning a move? Make sure your new home is running smoothly and avoid any surprise bills! A quick fire alarm test and checking the meter reading are simple steps to get you started," the employee wrote.
The team member elaborated in a video: "Moving into a new home can be very exciting, but there are a few things you need to prioritise once you get the keys. Start by taking your meter readings. You don't want to end up paying the last owner's energy usage."
Key Checks for New Homeowners
The British Gas representative also advised checking smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms by pressing the test button to ensure they emit a loud sound. Additionally, she recommended locating the stopcock—the valve for the main water supply—to be prepared for potential leaks. "Your stopcock is the valve for your main water supply. It's important that you know where this is, just in case you get a leak in the property," she said.
Other crucial steps include finding the thermostat for easy heating control and identifying the fuse box for electrical emergencies. "This is just in case you have any electrical emergency, so you can turn off your electrics quickly and safely, and you can restore any circuits that may have tripped," she explained. For new homeowners, she added, "It's always advised to get your boiler serviced by a qualified gas engineer."
Advice for Sellers
British Gas also offered guidance for those selling their homes: "If you're selling, make a list of where all the important things are in your home, and leave it for the people moving in." The energy supplier further suggested booking a Home Health Check for £75 to identify wasted energy and reduce consumption. "Want to find out how much of the energy you pay for is wasted and how to reduce this? Book a Home Health Check for just £75 and one of our energy experts will give you all the answers you need," the company stated.
