UK Ramipril Shortage Warning: Pharmacies Hit by Supply Issues
UK Ramipril Shortage: Pharmacies Face Supply Problems

A serious shortage warning has been issued over supply issues affecting certain medications in the UK. Health officials have reported a shortage of a specific dosage of ramipril, a medication used to treat high blood pressure, across the country.

Ramipril, available as tablets, capsules, or liquid, works by widening blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. A serious shortage protocol (SSP) has now been issued for ramipril 1.25mg capsules, meaning patients can only receive a one-month supply at a time.

Impact on Patients and Pharmacies

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) stated that three million items of ramipril are prescribed every month in England alone. NPA chairman Olivier Picard expressed concern: “We are concerned by this recent shortage, with a number of pharmacies being unable to order some strengths of ramipril as well as seeing the cost soar in recent weeks, in instances where stock can be found.”

Millions of patients rely on ramipril, and although alternative medications exist, supplies must be managed carefully. Picard urged the government to allow pharmacists to substitute ramipril prescriptions to avoid patients having to return to their GP for an alternative.

Growing Supply Problems

Pharmacies are increasingly facing supply problems affecting everyday medicines. Picard noted that while the medicine supply chain is complex, the rising problem of shortages is worrying for patients and heartbreaking for pharmacists. He attributed the fragility in the global supply chain to international instability and long-term underfunding of pharmacies, which has driven down medicine prices in the UK to unsustainable levels.

Expert Commentary

Ian Maidment, professor in clinical pharmacy at Aston University, explained that the SSP applies to all four devolved nations—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. He emphasized that ramipril is an ACE inhibitor and there are other ACE inhibitors available. “It is vital that patients discuss any concerns with their community pharmacy team or GPs, but the key message is that there are alternatives,” he said.

Government Response

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson stated: “The vast majority of the UK’s licensed medicines are in good supply, and to make sure this remains the case, we are investing more in the domestic medicine manufacturing industry. We are aware that ramipril 1.25mg capsules are currently in limited supply and are working closely with suppliers to resolve the disruptions. We have issued comprehensive management guidance to healthcare professionals, including a Serious Shortage Protocol to limit prescriptions to one month’s supply to support equitable distribution of available stocks.”
