A Midlands convenience store has been closed for the second time in six months following the discovery of thousands of illegal goods. American Candy in Burntwood was raided by Lichfield District Council, Staffordshire Trading Standards, and Staffordshire Police, who seized more than 5,700 illegal cigarettes and 67 vapes. The shop is now temporarily closed for the maximum permitted period of three months.
Second Closure in Six Months
This marks the second time the business has faced closure under the strongest available powers. Lichfield District Council stated on social media that Cannock Magistrates' Court granted a Closure Order with immediate effect. The council emphasized that while the law limits closure orders to three months, they will continue investigating illegal activity and taking enforcement action.
Public Health Risks
The sale of illegal tobacco and vapes poses serious risks to public health, undermines legitimate businesses, and is often linked to wider criminal activity. The council added that after the closure period ends, it cannot legally prevent the shop from reopening. Decisions about occupancy rest with the owner and tenant.
Lichfield District Council expressed frustration and called for stronger powers to deal with repeat offenders. They vowed to continue working with Staffordshire Trading Standards and Police if further illegal activity is detected.
