Plans for a new traveller site in the West Midlands have been rejected by local councillors, following objections from residents and concerns about the impact on green belt land. The proposed site, located near [location], was intended to provide 15 pitches for traveller families. However, the planning committee voted unanimously against the application, citing insufficient facilities and the loss of open countryside.
Community Opposition
Local residents had voiced strong opposition to the plans, arguing that the site would be inappropriate for the area and could lead to increased traffic and noise. More than 100 objections were submitted to the council, with many highlighting the importance of preserving the green belt. Councillors noted that the development would have resulted in an unacceptable loss of agricultural land and would have set a precedent for further encroachment.
Lack of Facilities
The planning committee also raised concerns about the lack of adequate facilities on the proposed site. The application did not include provisions for essential services such as water, electricity, and sewage connections. Councillors argued that without these facilities, the site would not provide a suitable living environment for traveller families. The committee also noted that the site was located in a remote area with limited access to public transport, schools, and healthcare.
Council's Decision
In a statement, the council said: 'The planning committee carefully considered all representations and concluded that the proposed traveller site would have a detrimental impact on the green belt and did not provide adequate facilities for future residents. The decision was made in line with local planning policies and the National Planning Policy Framework.' The applicant has the right to appeal the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.
The rejection of the traveller site plans highlights the ongoing challenges in meeting the accommodation needs of the traveller community while protecting the environment. The council has committed to working with partners to identify suitable locations for traveller sites in the future.
