Kelsey O'Mahoney, 26, and Russell Edwards, 41, have traded the Midlands for a sun-soaked existence in Egypt, where they pay just £300 in monthly rent and revel in winter temperatures of 28C. The couple, originally from Cannock, made the move to Hurghada in January 2025, seeking escape from what they describe as the 'depressing weather' and 'expensive rent' back in the UK.
Escaping High Costs and Grey Skies
Previously residing in a two-bedroom flat in the UK with a rent of £820 per month, Kelsey and Russell now enjoy a spacious three-bedroom apartment. Their decision to relocate came after several holidays in Egypt and inspiration from Russell's parents, who have lived there for over seven years. 'We fancied a change, a challenge, and a new life,' Kelsey explained.
The couple highlighted the stark contrast in living expenses:
- Rent: Reduced from £820 in the UK to £300 in Egypt.
- Bills: Household costs, including Wi-Fi, electricity, and water, plummeted from £380 to just £20 monthly.
- Food: A weekly shop costs around £40 compared to £80 in the UK, with fresh strawberries at 40p and two-course meals under £10.
Building a New Career and Community
Kelsey, who worked as a PA in the UK, now aspires to become a full-time content creator, sharing insights into their Egyptian life on social media. Russell, a former taxi driver, joins her in promoting local tourism and helping book excursions. 'We're trying to create content with local people to get the word out on how cheap things are, and to encourage people to come on holiday,' Kelsey said.
Despite initial challenges like language barriers, the couple has found Egyptians to be 'welcoming and kind,' easing their transition. They maintain close ties with family, assuring visits are only a flight away.
Long-Term Plans and Daily Life
Kelsey and Russell spend their days relaxing in the heat, enjoying clear blue skies, and exploring Hurghada's Red Sea coast. We love the heat, the views, the clear blue skies—we don't miss the depressing UK weather,' Kelsey added, noting the surprising warmth of Egyptian winters.
