Craig Charles Opens Up About Heartbreaking 2014 I'm A Celeb Departure

I'm A Celebrity South Africa star Craig Charles has candidly shared the deeply personal and heartbreaking reason behind his sudden exit from the show in 2014. The actor and presenter, now returning for the South Africa spin-off, revealed that his brother's unexpected passing compelled him to leave the jungle after just four days, an event that profoundly impacted his life and career.

The Sudden Loss That Changed Everything

In 2014, Craig Charles was informed of the sudden death of his brother, Dean, while filming I'm A Celebrity in the Australian jungle. He made the difficult decision to immediately depart the show to be with his family. This tragic event not only cut short his jungle adventure but also triggered a significant period of reflection and change in his personal and professional life.

The death of my brother, and my unexpected departure as a result, did change my life, Charles explained in recent interviews. It made me re-evaluate things and made me ask: ‘If that had happened to me, would I be happy with what I had achieved?’ I came up with the answer and it was ‘no’.

Years of Bittersweet Memories and Emotional Healing

For years after the incident, Charles described his association with I'm A Celebrity as bittersweet. He admitted that he could not watch the show for several years, as it evoked feelings of loss and sadness, both for his brother and for the experience he missed. At first, I’m A Celebrity felt bittersweet after I’d left, and in the first few years I couldn’t watch the show, he shared. It made me sad and it opened a world of loss. Every year it came around, I would feel a sense of loss and a feeling of what might have been.

However, over time, Charles noted that this sense of grief gradually decreased. And the last few years I have been able to watch it again without feeling the pain and the grief, he said, highlighting his emotional journey toward healing.

A New Chapter: Returning to I'm A Celeb South Africa

Now, 11 years later, Craig Charles has returned to I'm A Celebrity for the South Africa edition, joining other celebrities like Sir Mo Farah, Scarlett Moffatt, and David Haye. His comeback marks a significant moment of closure and new beginnings. And so, when this came round, it was at the right time. I feel strong and confident enough to face it again and have a laugh! he expressed.

Upon his return, Charles was immediately thrown into challenging Bushtucker Trials, including an eating challenge with Gemma Collins that took 4-5 hours to film. Reflecting on the trials, he humorously remarked, They've really ramped it. They're taking the mick. To be honest, I left with ptsd. Despite the intensity, he welcomed the opportunity to finally participate in the challenges he missed in 2014.

Impact on Career and Personal Growth

The loss of his brother and the abrupt end to his 2014 jungle stint led Charles to make significant career changes, including quitting his role on Coronation Street after ten years. I was 50 at the time, my brother was 52, I had been in Corrie for ten years and I felt in a rut, he explained. I knew I wanted to have some new adventures after that.

This period of reflection spurred him to seek new experiences and adventures, ultimately contributing to his decision to return to I'm A Celebrity. His story underscores themes of resilience, personal growth, and the importance of confronting past traumas to move forward.
