Mother's Persuasion Leads to Massive Lottery Win for Stoke-on-Trent Man

A warehouse operative from Stoke-on-Trent has banked a staggering £333,333 lottery jackpot after his mother convinced him not to cancel his subscription when he relocated. Lee Plant, aged 40, secured the substantial Postcode Lottery prize on Saturday, 4 April, merely two weeks after contemplating abandoning his membership.

Critical Decision to Continue Playing

Lee had planned to terminate his subscription when he vacated his shared housing on Weston Road in Meir approximately twelve months earlier and returned to live with his mother Wendy in the Northwood district. However, Wendy, aged 59, advised him to maintain his subscription at his previous address.

Lee stated emphatically: "If it wasn't for my mum, I wouldn't be here now - simple as that. I nearly cancelled my ticket and then mum told me not to."

Wendy recalled her decisive intervention: "I told him to keep it. I was already playing with my postcode, and I said, 'just leave yours going', and look what's happened! It's like a dream... it really is. I'm glad I told him to keep playing."

Postcode Lottery Mechanics and Windfall Details

Lee is among three residents in the Meir district of Stoke splitting £1 million after the ST3 6AL postcode secured the Millionaire Street prize. He continued playing with his previous postcode, a choice that proved absolutely vital for his financial future.

Lee explained: "I carried on playing using that postcode. A lot of people don't realise you can do that. I read it on the website - you can play with your old postcode, or any postcode."

The magnitude of the tax-free windfall hasn't completely registered yet for the warehouse worker. Shaking his head in disbelief, Lee remarked: "That's a life-changing amount of money. I want to get myself a property... treat me mum, treat me friends... maybe go on holiday."

Family Celebration and Future Plans

Wendy, who works as a learning support worker for adults with disabilities earning minimum wage, is similarly astounded by the unexpected fortune. She noted: "I'm paid minimum wage. I might be able to go down to part-time hours now."

The funds are due to arrive in Lee's bank account this week, a moment he concedes will feel completely unreal. He elaborated: "You never think you'll see anything like that in your lifetime. I'd have been happy with £3,000."

Wendy laughed while comparing the win to her previous financial experience: "The most I've ever had is £45,000 - and that was a divorce settlement! So, this... this is just something else."

Initial Disbelief and Celebration Plans

Upon discovering the win, the first thing Lee did was telephone his mother. Wendy recalled the surprising conversation: "Lee called me and said, 'I've had a phone call from Postcode Lottery, I've won something. They are coming tomorrow', and I put the phone down on him. I then rang him back and said, 'tell me again what you just told me... this is a prank isn't it?'"

Given the news arrived on 2 April, Lee felt justified in his initial scepticism. He commented: "I did say on the phone, 'What date is it today?' It was just a day after April Fools!"

Lee and Wendy intend to celebrate the win by performing their favourite songs at their local pub. Wendy revealed: "Well, we are going to karaoke tonight at The White Horse in Tunstall. We'll be both going up to sing 'The Winner Takes It All.'" Lee added with a smile: "After a few drinks."

Musical Passions and Family Sharing

The duo are passionate music enthusiasts, with Wendy heading out to sing most evenings of the week. She said: "I love singing 'I Am What I Am' by Gloria Gaynor, and 'You're my World' by Cilla Black." Lee revealed he has his own preferred tracks too, adding: "I like a bit of 'My Way' at the moment." Wendy added: "He used to do 'Believe' by Cher as well."

Bursting into song spontaneously, she belted out: "Do you believe in life after the Postcode Lottery." The couple intend to share their windfall generously with their nearest and dearest. Grandmother-of-four Wendy emphasized: "We'll treat the family. We've got a big one! It's going to make such a difference. We could actually go on a family holiday."

Additional Winners and Community Impact

Van driver Julian Malbon, aged 61, was among the other fortunate winners, also pocketing £333,333. The grandfather-of-two said: "It's a mind-blowing amount of money... I don't even know where to start. I can hardly stand up...my legs are like jelly." His wife Josie, aged 64, was equally gobsmacked, stating: "I just can't believe it... this kind of thing doesn't happen to people like us."

The couple's life-changing windfall follows a turbulent period marked by bereavements and a succession of costly household repairs. Julian remarked: "We've had the chimney stack go after strong winds, which damaged the roof – and you think, how are we going to pay for it? Now it's irrelevant."

Stoke charity Gingerbread Family Support has received £75,000 courtesy of Postcode Lottery participants. Jess Druce, Fundraising and Marketing Manager, commented: "We are deeply grateful to Postcode Lottery players for their generosity. Their contributions are helping to change lives here in Stoke-on-Trent. The money donated truly shows that local pounds really do support local people."
