£25 Cold Weather Payments Hit Bank Accounts for UK Benefit Claimants
DWP's £25 Cold Weather Payments start for benefit claimants

Hundreds of thousands of households across the UK are receiving an unexpected financial boost this week, as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) begins issuing Cold Weather Payments.

What Are The Payments For?

The automatic £25 payments are designed to help some of the nation's most vulnerable residents afford to heat their homes during periods of exceptionally cold weather. The scheme was triggered after recent bouts of bitterly cold conditions, where average temperatures were recorded at, or forecast to be, 0°C or below for seven consecutive days.

The support is targeted at those receiving specific means-tested benefits. The qualifying benefits include:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

Not Everyone Will Qualify

It is crucial to understand that not everyone claiming these benefits will receive the payment. Eligibility is strictly linked to your local weather conditions. The payments are made per eligible postcode area, not per individual benefit claim.

The scheme runs from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026. For every qualifying seven-day period of freezing weather within these dates, a separate £25 payment is made. With temperatures forecast to remain in low single figures, further payments may be confirmed in the coming days and weeks.

How The System Works

The process is automatic for those who qualify. The DWP states: "If you’re eligible, you’ll get these payments automatically. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0C or below over 7 consecutive days." The money should appear directly in your bank account, with no need to apply.

This intervention provides vital, timely support for low-income families, pensioners, and people with disabilities, helping to mitigate the health risks associated with living in a cold home during the winter months.
