This February half term, families across Cardiff and the surrounding region are warmly invited to celebrate the vibrant Lunar New Year at The Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff Bay. The centre has curated a fantastic programme of entirely free activities to welcome the auspicious Year of the Horse, providing a perfect opportunity for a memorable family day out.
A Festive Programme of Free Activities
The celebrations officially commence on Tuesday, February 17, which marks the start of Lunar New Year. Visitors can look forward to a fun-filled afternoon featuring complimentary drop-in origami and calligraphy workshops. These sessions offer a hands-on introduction to traditional crafts. Adding to the cultural spectacle, Papergang Theatre will present lively Peking opera performances at 12.30pm, 1.30pm, and 2.30pm.
Educational Fun and Traditional Crafts
On Wednesday, February 18, from 12pm to 4pm, Explore Learning will host interactive, hands-on activities designed to blend education with tradition. Children can participate in engaging sessions like Lucky Red Envelope Maths, providing a fun and insightful way to connect with Lunar New Year customs.
The festival culminates with the centre's much-loved annual signature event on Sunday, February 22, running from noon until 5pm. This grand finale is presented in partnership with the esteemed Cardiff Confucius Institute.
Grand Finale with Music, Dance, and a Lion
Families can enjoy a lively afternoon packed with diverse workshops, including the intricate arts of papercutting, lantern making, and Chinese knot-crafting. The event will also feature captivating music and dance performances. A highlight for many will be the special appearances by a magnificent Chinese White Lion at 12.30pm, 2pm, and 3.30pm, bringing traditional luck and excitement to the celebrations.
