Hyndburn Borough Council has revealed an exciting and extensive events programme for 2026, promising a vibrant year of family-friendly activities spread across the borough's high streets and cherished green spaces. Following a record-breaking response to an open invitation for proposals, the council has selected 23 events to receive funding, ensuring a rich variety of entertainment for residents and visitors throughout the coming year.
A Record Number of Proposals
In December, the council issued an open call for event proposals across nine distinct categories. This invitation sparked tremendous interest, with a remarkable 53 submissions received from organisations eager to contribute to Hyndburn's cultural and community calendar. After a thorough and rigorous selection process, funding has been allocated to successful applicants who will deliver a diverse programme designed to animate the borough.
Councillor Enthusiasm for the Programme
Councillor Kimberley Whitehead, Deputy Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council, expressed her delight at the response. "We are so happy with the number and quality of responses we received from so many organisations," she said. "The 2026 programme promises entertainment for all the family. We're pleased that once again this year some events will showcase our parks and green spaces as well as our high street locations. I’m looking forward to another exciting year of events in Hyndburn and I am proud that the Council has sponsored so many."
Highlights of the 2026 Events Calendar
The funded events will commence at Easter, with Community Solutions bringing their popular Easter Trail to Gatty Park. This will be followed by numerous other park-based activities throughout the year. In May, the newly refurbished Mercer Hall in Great Harwood will host a special music lesson event for children, setting the stage for the main event season beginning in June.
The summer months will be particularly bustling, featuring returning favourites such as the Accrington Food Festival, Oswaldtwistle Carnival, Proms in the Park, and the Soapbox Challenge. Additionally, three new theatre-in-the-park events are scheduled to take place across Hyndburn during the summer holidays, offering fresh outdoor entertainment.
Autumn and Winter Celebrations
September will see the return of the much-loved Hyndburn Sound, bringing live music sessions to pubs across Accrington and beyond. The Great Harwood Horticultural Show will also make a comeback at Mercer Hall. As the year draws to a close, Hyndburn will celebrate Christmas in style, with the Accrington Lights Switch-on and the Great Harwood Christmas Extravaganza returning after last year's success. Traditional light switch-on events will also illuminate townships across the borough.
Spotlight on Key Events and Organisers
Among the highlights is the return of the Twilight event to Rhyddings Park in Oswaldtwistle, organised by KSEvents following a successful debut last year. Sarah Barton of KSEvents commented, "KSEvents are delighted to have been awarded funding once again to be able to deliver our Twilight event in Rhyddings Park. Last year’s event was a huge success, with everything being totally free for families. We look forward to bringing back the fabulous silent disco as well as creating some additional new light displays for this year."
Ann Warrington of the Friends of Rhyddings Park shared her excitement about receiving funding for Proms in the Park. "This support allows us to create an inclusive celebration for our community, right in the heart of our much-loved park," she said. "We’re especially excited to be working in partnership with Ossyfest, whose creativity and energy will help make this a truly memorable event for all ages."
Expanding Community Offerings
Josh Allen of Accrington Community Events announced that Hyndburn Sound will return for its fourth consecutive year, aiming to be bigger than ever with more artists and venues. He also revealed that the group has taken over the organisation of Oswaldtwistle Carnival 2026, which was at risk of folding. "A massive thank you to Hyndburn Borough Council for providing the funding which allows us to support local artists and pubs within the borough," Allen stated. "Oswaldtwistle Carnival returns Sunday June 21st."
This comprehensive 2026 programme underscores Hyndburn Borough Council's commitment to fostering community spirit, supporting local talent, and providing accessible entertainment across its diverse landscapes, from urban high streets to tranquil green spaces.
