Aberdeen Railway Heritage Trust Seeks Volunteers for Restoration and Museum Support
The Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust, an award-winning charity based in Aberdeen, is actively recruiting volunteers to contribute to its ongoing restoration efforts and community activities. Established in 2007, the Trust took over a neglected and overgrown area adjacent to Duthie Park, which it now leases from Network Rail and Aberdeen City Council.
Restoration Achievements and Current Projects
Over the years, the Trust has made significant progress in revitalizing the site. Key accomplishments include the restoration of two buildings: the former Engine Shed and Railway Offices. Additionally, the old railway turntable has been repaired and is now fully operational after decades of disuse. The site also features a Heritage Centre that celebrates the rich railway history of North East Scotland.
Currently, the Trust is focused on restoring carriages and wagons, with a particular emphasis on its unique collection of Victorian-era railway carriages, locomotives, and wagons. These historical artifacts date back to the dawn of the railway age and are being meticulously restored by dedicated volunteers.
Volunteer Opportunities and Community Engagement
The Trust operates three days a week and one evening, supervising groups of volunteers in a variety of practical activities. These include:
- Site restoration, renovation, construction, and maintenance
- Administrative support for the office
- Plant and building maintenance tasks
- Joinery, metalworking, restoration, painting, and conservation work
- Assistance in the museum, shop, and tea-room
The Trust prides itself on creating an inclusive environment where people of all ages and abilities can participate. It welcomes individuals looking to learn new skills or focus on specific trades, fostering camaraderie and friendship among volunteers. Both men and women are encouraged to join, and the Trust also operates a Men's Shed program to facilitate social connections and skill-sharing.
Getting Involved and Contact Information
To encourage wider involvement, the Trust utilizes publicity, newsletters, social media, and its website for outreach. If you are interested in volunteering, whether to use existing skills or learn new ones, the Trust is eager to welcome you.
