The annual Derbyshire Dales Walking Festival has officially returned, offering a fortnight of free outdoor activities for all. Organized by the local council to celebrate National Walking Month, the event features routes tailored to all abilities and interests. The celebrations began on May 18 and will run until May 30.
A launch event at Hall Leys Park in Matlock kicked off the festivities, where friendly guides led participants on a fully accessible social walk and a scenic river route. Sam Barton, the District Council's health walks coordinator, stated: "There really is something for everyone. The festival builds on the successful programme of community walks that take place here in the beautiful Dales throughout the year, supporting local communities to maintain active lifestyles and improve the health and wellbeing of local people."
Family-Friendly Events
Families can look forward to special events during the half-term school holidays. A nature walk is scheduled for Ashbourne Park on May 27, followed by a treasure trail in Bakewell Park on May 28.
Adventurous Treks
More adventurous walkers can tackle a challenging ten-and-a-half-mile trek from Eyam with steep climbs. Other unique highlights over the next fortnight include an evening bat walk in Matlock Bath, Nordic walking in Darley Dale, and an early morning dawn chorus walk in Bradley Woods.
Guided Walks from Iconic Locations
Guided groups will also be setting off from various iconic locations, including Magpie Mine, Hurst Farm, Rowsley, Middleton Top, and the Lumsdale Valley. Spaces are limited for most of the upcoming sessions.
