St Catherine's Hospice is calling for 150 volunteers to support its flagship Midnight Walk event in Horsham on Saturday, June 6. Last year, 140 dedicated volunteers helped more than 650 walkers raise an impressive £165,000 for the charity.
About the Hospice
Based in Pease Pottage, St Catherine's provides essential end-of-life care and support to approximately 2,000 people each year across east Surrey and west Sussex. The Midnight Walk, the charity's most beloved and largest fundraiser, relies entirely on the generosity of volunteers who give up their time throughout the night.
The Event
The Midnight Walk is a night of celebration, reflection, and remembrance. Participants can choose from four distances: two, seven, 13, or 17 miles. The primary volunteer role is that of a route guide, where pairs of volunteers direct walkers along the route, ensuring their safety and offering encouragement.
Last year, Mandy and Ian were stationed at a mini roundabout in Horsham to guide participants. Ian shared: "The enthusiasm and good humour of everyone taking part – be they serious walkers or the party goers in fancy dress – was infectious, making our time on duty so very pleasurable. We also had visits from two local residents with offers of tea and coffee!" He described the role as "very worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable" and confirmed they will be volunteering as route guides again this year.
Other Opportunities
Volunteering opportunities are also available at refreshment stops, where helpers keep walkers fuelled, hydrated, and energised to complete their challenge. St Catherine's is looking for people to assist between 2pm and 6am, with an average shift of about five hours. However, any amount of time is appreciated and will make a significant difference.
