John Chubb's Phoenix Sport show featured a younger guest this weekend, with 13-year-old Roman Curtis joining alongside Alby Saunders from Burwood Motorsports. Roman is already making significant progress in karting, currently ranked as the number one UK Sodi World Series Junior driver. He recently finished seventh at the world finals in Malaga, competing against drivers from across the globe. For someone still at school, it's a level of competition that most people won't have experienced.
Roman's Focus and Determination
Speaking on the programme, Roman came across as focused and clear about what's involved in motorsport at this level. It requires regular training, travel, and a fair amount of organisation behind the scenes; it's not just about turning up and driving. That's where Burwood Motorsports fits in.
Support from Burwood Motorsports
Founded by Alby Saunders, the Brentwood-based business works to support young drivers like Roman, helping them find sponsorship and build the connections needed to continue in the sport. As Alby explained, there's a lot of talent at grassroots level, but progressing often depends on having the right backing. Roman's results so far suggest he is making the most of those opportunities.
At the same time, he is still at the beginning of what could be a longer journey in the sport, with the usual mix of school, training, and competition to balance.
Local Spotlight on Motorsport
For listeners, it was a useful look at a sport that doesn't always get much local attention, despite the level some young drivers are reaching. As always, you can hear the interview again at phoenixfm.com. Alby's website is at burwoodmotorsports.com.
The Brentwood Gazette covers areas including but not limited to Billericay, Brentwood, Hutton, Shenfield, and Wickford in Essex.
